For inconsistent names and values that are hard to inspect, OpenRefine provides a separate data-cleaning workspace. The free, open-source tool supports faceting, clustering, transformation and enrichment from external services.

Filtering, merging and matching serve different purposes
Facets help inspect and filter data; clustering groups similar values for possible merging; reconciliation matches against external databases through services. Undo, redo and operation-history reuse support this workflow, but similarity does not establish that two names refer to the same entity.

Begin with one column and a copy
As a practical approach, preserve the original, inspect a column with facets and review whether proposed clusters really represent one value. Before reconciliation, check the chosen service and what it receives. Do not merge every similar-looking value automatically.

Prefer explainable cleaning decisions
The useful question is not simply how many unique values disappear, but why each change is justified. For a contact list, collection catalogue or research table, decide first which differences are spelling variants and which identify genuinely different objects.
Local storage does not mean every operation stays offline
The privacy page says project data, history and preferences are stored locally and are not encrypted by default. URL fetching, reconciliation and some import/export operations communicate with external services. Check those boundaries for sensitive data and back up the workspace as recommended.
