Distinguish the platform from a hosted project
GitHub’s About page describes a developer platform and links its official documentation. The platform provides collaboration infrastructure; who maintains a repository, whether it is trustworthy and whether you may use it are questions about the individual project.

Each step has a different role
Hello World introduces repository creation, branching, commits, opening a pull request and merging. It requires an account but not a local Git installation or command-line knowledge. Repository creation also includes an explicit Public or Private choice.

Practice a small change from start to finish
Open Hello World in Docs and create a practice repository you control. Add a short README, change one sentence on a branch, commit it and inspect the difference in a pull request. Choose visibility deliberately and use non-sensitive practice material before completing the merge.

Reviewability matters more than simply uploading files
Writing down why a change exists and reading its diff before merging can help future collaborators understand it. It also gives you a chance to notice accidental deletions or a change that has grown beyond its original purpose.
Visibility is not permission to reuse
Do not commit passwords, tokens or private material in a practice exercise. Check a project’s licence, provenance and maintenance before using its code. A repository’s presence, a completed tutorial or a successful merge does not establish security or production readiness.
