Jupyter | Code, explanation and results together

Official name:Project Jupyter

Start at Project Jupyter to choose Notebook or JupyterLab for computational documents and find installation guidance. The project site does not supply your data, dependencies or a guaranteed continuously hosted computing service.

Organise a computation as a document

Project Jupyter provides software, open standards and service entry points for interactive computing. Notebooks can keep code, narrative, equations and outputs together so a reader can follow the analysis step by step.

Choose the right interface

The homepage distinguishes the document-oriented Jupyter Notebook, JupyterLab's workspace for code and data, and JupyterHub for multi-user deployments. About Us describes open community development. These subprojects are not interchangeable hosted services.

Begin with a reproducible example

Choose an interface, then use Install and Documentation to set up an environment. Start with a small non-sensitive dataset, run the notebook in order, and record dependencies and input locations rather than checking only previously saved plots.

Explain computation, not outsource judgment

A notebook is useful when readers need to see how code produces a result rather than view a standalone script or screenshot. The author still needs to justify the statistical method and the suitability of the data.

Treat notebooks as executable files

Inspect unfamiliar code and its source before running it. Check outputs, paths and credentials before sharing. A working local interface is not a reason to expose it publicly without access controls.

Original decision record
