darktable | Organise and develop camera RAW photographs
Official name:darktable
darktable combines photographic file management with RAW development. Its site connects features, installation resources and camera-support information. Open-source status alone does not establish compatibility with every camera or workflow.

A workflow built around photographs
darktable is an open-source photography workflow application and RAW developer. The project combines digital-negative management, image browsing and RAW processing, making it relevant when you need to organise, select and develop a set of photographs.

Editing and export are different stages
The project describes non-destructive editing: display processing operates on cached image buffers, while the full image is converted during export. Distinguish the editing preview from the file you will deliver, and inspect the exported result rather than relying only on the editing window.

Check your camera, then try a small set
The site links installation instructions, resources and camera support. First check your camera and file requirements, then test browsing, processing and export with a few photographs while retaining the originals. An exposure adjustment on a small set is a useful trial before committing a larger collection.

Software and website images have different licences
The About page identifies GNU GPL version 3 or later for the software. The footer separately identifies CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 for the website and images unless otherwise stated. Using the application and republishing website artwork are different actions; the software licence does not clear that artwork.

When it is worth trying
For work centred on your own camera files, testing a complete photographic workflow is more informative than comparing feature names. For an occasional edit to an ordinary image, consider the learning cost as well. A complex workflow should solve a real problem rather than create extra steps.
