Anki | Schedule flashcard reviews around recall

Official name:Anki

Anki uses flashcards and recall feedback to schedule later reviews, with support for media and custom card layouts. Its site links the desktop program, AnkiMobile and AnkiDroid. Check the separate conditions for synchronization, mobile apps and third-party shared decks.

Turn material into questions you can revisit

Anki is a flashcard program. During review, try to recall the answer and rate how well you remembered it; the program uses that feedback to schedule a later review. Decks organise material for repeated practice rather than a single reading session.

Separate the apps from the sync service

The site offers a free desktop program, identifies AnkiMobile as the official iOS app, and lists AnkiDroid as a free Android app developed by contributors. AnkiWeb provides free synchronization. Desktop availability does not imply that the iOS app is free; check its current store conditions.

Begin with a small deck of your own

Choose your platform and installation guide from the main site, then create a small deck. We recommend using material you understand and have rights to use, putting one clear question on each card, and rating recall honestly. Explore AnkiWeb if you need synchronization, while keeping a local backup.

Use recall practice alongside understanding

Remembering a card does not establish understanding of an entire subject. Use cards to reinforce key material alongside reading, exercises and real application. If new cards crowd out review time, adjust the material and pace rather than pursuing a larger collection.

Third-party decks and add-ons need judgment

AnkiWeb says shared decks are provided by third parties without platform review, with a default licence for personal study only. Add-ons are also third-party software and do not run in a protected environment. Use trusted add-ons, do not equate download access with redistribution rights, and keep backups.
